Rotary's Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do. A
book by Myron J. Taylor I became a Rotarian while serving as Minister of the East Point Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia in the late sixties. It was natural to become a member of the Westwood Village Rotary Club when I moved to Los Angeles. For 33 years I achieved a record of perfect attendance, served on a number of committees, often gave Invocations, and develop a series of messages (talks) for Rotarians on the famous "Four-Way Test"–a series of ethical questions by which Rotarians are to measure their business practices. I spoke to more than a hundred different Rotary Clubs over the years, as well as a number of Area Rotary gatherings. The Westwood Rotary club honored me as a Paul Harris Fellow and as Rotarian of the year. The challenge of ethics in modern business is a complex issue worthy of our best thought. "The Four-Way Test" is four questions: Is It The Truth? Is It Fair To All Concerned? Will It Build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will It Be Beneficial To All Concerned? These are not laws from which there can be no deviation, but principles that must be thought through and applied honestly in the many intricate concerns of the business world. Yet, there is a great difference between the person who sincerely wants to be honest in business and the person who does not. The great programs undertaken by Rotary–to provide inoculation against polio for all the children of the world, and support for world literacy–have positive appeal to business people who want to make a difference in this world. All of this, plus the many excellent projects supported by Rotary world-wide and in the local community offer a minister a major avenue of helpful service.
