#2 - SPECIAL INTEREST These
books each have some special interest that is important and will be
helpful to you as a preacher. ▪ BARTH, Karl. The Preaching of the Gospel. Westminster Press, 1963.
Barth almost restricts preaching to Bible paraphrasing, but it is a good
corrective to Bible neglect. Challenging. Barth's sermons are not
Barthian. ▪ BLACKWOOD, Andrew W. The Preparation of Sermons. Abingdon Press, 1948. ▪ BROADUS, John A. Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. Doran, 1870.
For many years America's most used seminary textbook. Sound, massive,
still helpful. ▪ COFFIN, Henry Sloane. What to Preach. Doran, 1926.
Not a basic book, but five good lectures on expository, doctrinal,
ethical, pastoral, and evangelistic preaching. ▪ DAVIS. H. Grady. Design for Preaching. Fortress, 1958.
One of the great books on preaching. ▪ DODD, C. H. The Apostolic Preaching. Hodder & Stoughton, 1936 (Harper, 1962).
Academic, biblical, theological, much quoted. Still relevant. ▪ FORD, D. W. Cleverly. Preaching Today. Epworth, 1969. ▪ JONES, Edgar D. The Royalty of the Pulpit. Harper & Bros., 1949.
Brief comments on 75 years of the Yale Lectures on Preaching. ▪ JOWETT, J. H. The Preacher: His Life and Work. Hodder & Stoughton, 1912.
A good man and a fine preacher says obvious things well. ▪ KNOX, John. The Integrity of Preaching. Abingdon Press, 1957.
A small but dynamic book. Discusses nature of preaching, biblical
preaching, preaching as Sacrament. Emphasizes scholarship. ▪ MacLEOD, Donald, ed. Here Is My Method. Fleming H. Revell, 1952.
Thirteen well known preachers tell how they prepare their sermons. Dr.
Coffin, pp.52-60, is especially good. |
